Isabel Botero, Ph.D.

Isabel grew up in Colombia as a member of two entrepreneurial families. Although there have been different family ventures started, most of them have not survived after the second generation. Thus, through her extensive work with family businesses, Isabel helps family enterprises understand the complexities they face, while recognizing and exploring their opportunities to achieve continuity.
Isabel is an Associate Professor and the Former Director of the Family Business Center at the University of Louisville. She has been a Faculty Member at multiple universities, including the University of Louisville, Stetson University, the University of Kentucky and Aarhus University.
Isabel is an award-winning researcher and international speaker who has worked and published with research teams from Australia, Germany, Belgium, Spain, Colombia, Mexico, Chile and England. Her research focuses on strategic communication processes and next-generation issues in family enterprises. She is an associate editor for the Journal of Family Business Strategy and a past FOBI Scholar, with over 40 publications in journals such as the Family Business Review, Journal of Family Business Strategy, Journal of Family Business Management, Journal of Management Studies and Management Communication Quarterly.
Isabel is a Fellow for the Family Firm Institute, a Certified Exit Planning Advisor for EPI – Exit Planning Institute, and she holds an Advanced Certificate in Family Wealth Advising. She earned her Ph.D. and M.A. in Communications from Michigan State University. Isabel acts as a board member and treasurer of the International Family Business Research Academy (IFERA) since 2017.
Isabel is based in Louisville, Kentucky. She is fluent in English and Spanish.
